Smith Tips - Does Your Business Need A Blog?


Hi everyone, welcome to Smith Tips. Today we're going to talk about a really common question we hear a lot, "Does my business need a blog?"

The short answer is: probably, and, we're going to tell you why.

Lets examine each of these reason.

REASON 1: Brand Content Centre

First reason I want to talk about is that the blog provides a great content centre for your content as a brand. So, you've got Facebook going, you've got Instagram rolling, you've got an email newsletter, you might even have some radio ads or some print advertising flying around. The blog provides a fantastic centre for all that content that we're pushing out.

We have a product launch, for example, we do a blog post about it, and then we push it out to all our social channels. Then we can drive all that traffic back to our website, and that's where we want people, that is the hub, and it should be the hub, of our entire brand.

REASON 2: Build Authority in Industry/Market

Another great reason to have a blog for your business is that it is the place where we can build authority, and show people all the insight and knowledge you've gained over all the years you've been doing whatever it is you do, the blog is the vehicle to show all that knowledge.

You can do analysis, talk about new products you have coming out, you can talk about topical issues in your industry, you can answer really, really tricky and in-depth questions, you can do a million things. We can't do that anywhere else on our website. On your website, your services page, product pages, your contact page, about us page, we can't give any real, you know, insight, on those pages, and the blog gives us a place to do that.

REASON 3: Improve SEO

Another really important reason for a cranking blog on your business' website is improved SEO, which means higher Google rankings basically. So, Google figured out a really long time ago that websites that provide fresh and up to date content were websites that were providing a great user experience.

They factored that into their algorithm, and started to prioritise those websites over websites that weren't providing fresh content.

As of early 2018, it is a really, really effective and easy way to move your website up the rankings.

The blog gives us the vehicle to provide that fresh content, right, because once you've done products and services and about us and your home page, where can you put fresh content every week or every month? Well, the blog gives us the place to do that.

REASON 4: Create Better Ads

Next great reason to have a blog on your website is that those articles that we do on the blog work fantastically as ads or boosted content, on Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms. In my opinion, they're so much more engaging and so much more clickable, than a straight ad that says, "Hi, this is who we are, please book our service tomorrow".

If you're answering a question or giving some insight into your industry, that's going to be so much more engaging for a person, and we're going to bring them to our website and to our brand, a lot easier than if it was a straight ad.

REASON 5: Answers Search Queries & Attract New Customers

And number five: We can answer people's direct search queries, and bring in website traffic, via ranking a great piece of content.

Imagine someone is searching for "great landscaping ideas 2018", so it's nice and up to date, and if you do a blog titled "Great Landscaping Ideas 2018" well you're going to have a very good chance of that page ranking in that Google search, someone clicking on it, getting insight, and then, who are they going to go to when they need some landscaping? Someone who's given them some really valuable insight and information, and that will be on your blog.
